Hercules on the Bayou is a great book for folks looking for something a little different. Author Connie Collins Morgan draws on her personal background to retell the Greek myth of Hercules’ labors as a series of pourquois (i.e. “the reason why…) tales in the voice of a Cajun storyteller. As the title promises, this Hercules grew up in the Louisiana bayou and fights giant crawdads and infernal catfish instead of the Nemean Lion and the Lernaean Hydra. Herb Leonhard’s rich, expressive illustrations are a perfect complement to the lively text. This book’s evocative language and stretching vocabulary make it a perfect book to read aloud. There is a helpful glossary of Cajun AND Greek terms in the back. All in all, Hercules on the Bayou is the perfect antidote to the traditional formality that gives Greek mythology its undeserved ponderous reputation. – Krishni Burns
