This is an engrossing book-by-book adaptation of Homer’s Iliad that is sure to pique young readers’ interest in Greek mythology and literature. Gareth Hinds combines an accessible and engrossing retelling of key moments of the epic with gorgeous illustrations that help readers envision this world of gods, men, women, violence, love, competition, and (of course) rage.
Hinds proves himself not only a sensitive reader of the Iliad but also an avid student of classical antiquity, providing his readers with tools to delve more deeply and to help them follow the dense tale’s narrative thread. He gives an overview of all the main characters, maps, footnotes, illustrated notes, and a bibliography. Best of all, Hinds allows Homer’s complexity to shine through, explicitly inviting readers to contemplate the bigger issues raised by the Iliad. His presentation of this material supports his own conviction that “every war story is an anti-war story.” Hinds does not shy away from violence, so this material may not be appropriate for young children. Scenes involving sex, such as Hera’s seduction of Zeus in Book 14, are handled with tact.
My 8-year-old loved this book, but I prepared him well for the violence and read it with him, carefully guiding his reading throughout. In general, Hinds’ Iliad probably warrants slightly older readers and/or parental supervision. - Stephanie McCarter
