This is a delightful book of myths about Hermes, retold in graphic novel form by Caldecott Medalist Mordicai Gerstein. With Hermes at the center of every story, it’s easy to appreciate just how much trouble he gets up to. The myths are adapted for younger readers, and the book is marketed for readers aged 7-10. That means a few welcome alterations in the story’s relationships. For example, Io is Hera’s friend. When Zeus tries to flirt with her, both she and Hera are monumentally furious with Zeus for kidnapping her and turning her into a cow so that she can’t explain what he was up to. The art is colorful and lively. Between the clever use of panels and the energetic baby flying around getting into trouble for the first half of the book, I was reminded a little bit of Maurice Sendak’s In the Night Kitchen. – Krishni Burns
