This is a lushly illustrated retelling of how the hero Bellerophon came to ride the winged horse Pegasus and slay the Chimera. Marianna Mayer approaches the story like a fairy-tale. Bellerophon must slay the monster to save the kingdom and win the hand of the lady he loves. Mayer opts to forgo the usual taming of Pegasus and instead depicts Pegasus as an intelligent free-spirited creature who forms a partnership with the young hero. The illustrations match the story’s sweeping romantic tone. Kinuko Y. Craft is famous for her fantasy illustrations. Her gorgeous landscapes and sumptuous figures would do the Pre-Raphaelites proud. Each illustration enriches the text immeasurably to give the story a magical, timeless quality that is perfect for a millennia-old myth. — Krishni Burns
