This book retells the story of Persephone’s kidnapping and part-time rescue beautifully, as you can see from the cover. The illustrations have a Pre-Raphaelite feel, especially in the upper world, but they have a dramatic flair that is almost Romantic. The rift separating Persephone in the underworld from her mother and the upperworld is visible on almost every page. Author Sally Pomme Clayton follows the myth as it is preserved in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter very closely, so this book is a good choice for serious mythology lovers who want to know the “original story.” The vocabulary is a little challenging, so I recommend it for young readers looking for a stretch read. – Krishni Burns
