This book is part of Shackleton Kids’ series Mis Pequeños Héroes. It tells the story of Plato’s life and introduces the basics of his philosophy. Eduardo Acín Dal Maschio clearly knows his stuff, and he’s good at adapting difficult ideas for his young audience. He uses apples and dogs to introduce the forms, then connects that idea to bigger concepts like defining goodness and opposing tyranny. Much of what we know about Plato’s life is mythical, and this book does a respectable job treading the line between what was said and what was (probably) true. Socrates plays a major role early in the narrative, and Aristotle makes a moving cameo. One of my favorite features is that there is dialogue on almost every page, as there should be in anything involving Plato. There are even a few Greek inscriptions in the illustrations, although architecture enthusiasts had better not count the columns. At the end of the book there is a list of the major events of Plato’s life, and a “Quieres Saber Más?” section with extra information on Plato’s Dialogues and “The Allegory of the Cave.” It’s a solid introduction to Plato’s life and influences for primary school aged readers. – Krishni Burns
