This sweet little Latin novella follows a young Rhinoceros as she explores her own identity. Rena does not have a horn, which makes her question whether she is really a Rhinoceros. As she compares herself to other animals of the Savannah, she realizes that her lack of a horn does not mean that she’s any less of a rhino, and she comes to accept that sometimes patience pays off. New Latin readers will get to practice their ablatives as they explore with Rena.
This book is the fourth and last book in Bolchazy-Carducci’s “I Am Reading Latin Stories” series. The full series has four Latin novels, each increasing in difficulty. The target audience is kids aged 5-9, with no knowledge of Latin. This book is a perfect example of the fact that books don’t have to be complicated to still be engaging, delightful, and educational. – Krishni Burns
